Senior Data Analyst - Power BI & Microsoft Fabric

Insourcehire · India

FULL TIME

Job Description

Location: India (Remote) Employment Type: Full-time

About the Client

Our client has a strong focus on data-driven decision-making. They run a Microsoft Fabric data warehouse and a Power BI reporting platform, with the data platform (ingestion, warehouse modelling, and backend development) owned and maintained by an external data partner. They are now looking to hire a Senior Data Analyst to take ownership of the Power BI reporting layer, analytics delivery, and stakeholder insight.

Role Overview

This is a senior-level role requiring a highly independent and proactive analyst who owns the front-end reporting layer end to end. The analyst works on top of governed, centrally managed warehouse tables and semantic models, building and maintaining reports, delivering analysis, and translating business requests into reporting outputs. Where a request requires changes to the underlying data models or new source integrations, the analyst specs the requirement and raises it to the data platform partner through an established ticketing and sprint process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of the Power BI reporting estate, including:

- Building new reports and dashboards from existing warehouse tables and semantic models

- Maintaining and optimising current reports - DAX measure refactoring, visual-level query reduction, refresh configuration

- Troubleshooting report issues using Performance Analyzer, DAX Studio, and Tabular Editor

- Managing workspaces, app distribution, and report-level access (including RLS testing)

  • Develop and maintain DAX measures - time intelligence, context transition, calculation groups, field parameters
  • Use Power Query (M) for report-level transformations where appropriate, keeping heavy transformation logic in the warehouse
  • Write SQL against the Fabric warehouse SQL endpoint for ad-hoc analysis, data validation, and exploratory work
  • Deliver ad-hoc analysis and reporting to support commercial stakeholders - sales performance, profitability, churn, brand and distribution analysis
  • Translate business requests into clear technical specifications: identify whether a request can be self-served from existing models or requires a model change, and raise model change tickets to the data platform partner with defined source, grain, and business logic
  • Participate in a regular development cadence with the data platform partner to prioritise, spec, and review backend changes
  • Identify reporting gaps and improvement opportunities and surface them with recommendations

Required Skills & Experience

  • 5-8+ years of experience in Data Analytics or a similar role
  • Expert-level DAX and Power BI report development - this is the core of the role
  • Strong Power Query (M) skills
  • Strong SQL proficiency (T-SQL or similar) for analysis against warehouse endpoints
  • Solid understanding of dimensional modelling
  • (star schema, fact/dimension grain) as a consumer of governed models
  • Experience working with Microsoft Fabric or a comparable lakehouse/warehouse platform (Synapse, Databricks SQL, BigQuery)
  • Experience operating within a governed BI environment - deployment pipelines, workspace structure, version-controlled report files (PBIP/PBIX)
  • Proven experience collaborating with a separate data engineering function or external data partner, raising well-specified requirements rather than building pipeline workarounds
  • Ability to independently manage priorities and communicate clearly with non-technical stakeholders

Nice to Have

  • Exposure to Fabric-specific features: Direct Lake semantic models, OneLake, Fabric capacity behaviour
  • Familiarity with dbt-modelled warehouses or similar transformation frameworks (as a consumer)
  • Basic Git familiarity for report version control
  • Experience in consumer goods / retail / beverages, or with ERP and inventory system data (e.g. brewery or production management systems)
  • Exposure to AI-powered analytics tools such as Microsoft Copilot, Fabric Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude AI, or GitHub Copilot for report development, SQL generation, DAX optimization, data analysis, and productivity enhancement

Out of Scope

  • Data pipeline development, source system integrations, warehouse data modelling, and platform infrastructure are owned by the external data partner. The analyst raises and specs these requirements but does not build them. \

Key Traits

  • High ownership of the reporting layer and accountability for output quality
  • Disciplined about working within the governed platform - raises model changes rather than building fragile report-level workarounds
  • Ability to work independently with minimal guidance
  • Strong business understanding and proactive in identifying improvements

Why This Role

  • Opportunity to work with a UK-based client, with end-to-end local (Indian) payroll and HR management handled by us
  • Full ownership of the Power BI layer of a mature, well-governed data platform
  • Exposure to a modern data stack including Microsoft Fabric, with an experienced data engineering partner to learn from
